This festival honours Jain deities and celebrates the Nirvana or final liberation of Lord Mahavira, the 24th Teerthankar, founder of Jainism. Mahavir attained Nirvana or freedom from the cycle of life on this day. He died on this day at the age of 72, at Pawapuri in Bihar.
On this day, Mahavira is worshipped at midnight and early next morning. It is a solemn occasion and sacred scriptures are recited. Houses are decorated and illuminated.
