US VISA Information
There are two basic types of U.S. visas: Immigrant
Visas, for those intending to reside permanently in the United States (whether or
not they intend to work) and Nonimmigrant Visas, for those
visiting the United States temporarily.
The most common nonimmigrant visas are visitor visas, issued to persons who wish to
enter the United States temporarily for business or pleasure. Other types of nonimmigrant
visas are given to students, participants in exchange programs, temporary workers,
performing artists, professional journalists, and representatives of foreign governments,
among others.
Visa services are
available at the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi as well as at the three Consulates General at
Mumbai, Calcutta and Chennai. Each office has responsibility for, or consular jurisdiction
over, a particular geographic area in India. Visa seekers must apply to the consular
office in the appropriate consular district.
