Non Immigrant Visas
Indian citizens who
wish to visit the United States temporarily must first obtain a visa.
Those coming to the U.S. as tourists, to visit friends or relatives, for medical
treatment or to conduct business, must obtain a visitor's visa
(B-1 for business or B-2 for pleasure/medical treatment). Students must obtain a foreign student visa
(F for academic studies, or M for nonacademic or vocational studies),
and exchange program participants either a J visa (for programs
designated by the United States Information Agency) or a Q
visa (for programs designated by the Immigration and Naturalization Service).
Temporary workers need a temporary worker's visa--H, L, O or P, depending on the kind of
work to be performed; they must have a petition approved by the Immigration and
Naturalization Service (INS) before they apply for a visa.
Indians wishing to
travel to the United States as performing artists, professional journalists, government
representatives, or in some other special category should contact the Embassy's
Consular Office to determine the type of visa needed. For detailed information on required
documentation for any of the visas mentioned above, please contact the Consular Office at
the Embassy or Consulate in your area.
