Naba Barsha
Naba Barsha or New Year of the Bengalis marks the beginning of their New Year. The day begins with celebration and prabhat pheris (early morning processions). As is the custom, a dip in a river or tank is essential to cleanse one's soul of sins. Songs and dances are organised to welcome the New Year. The women of the house make beautiful designs called Alpana on the floor of the house with powdered rice.
