Indian women, the married and the soon-to-be married observe a day long fast on this day to pray for the well being of their husbands. They do not drink water the whole day and the fast is broken only after the moon is sighted through a sieve. The woman touches the feet of her husband and he gives her water and food.
The goddess known as Gaur Mata is worshipped. Women apply henna and wear new clothes and lots of jewellery.
