Diwali
Diwali
is an important festival which is celebrated as the day when Ram
returned to Ayodhya after his 14-year exile. This day also marks
the beginning of the Hindu
year and is a festival which is celebrated in all Hindu homes. The
houses are lighted up with either the traditional diya (oil lamps)
or artificial lights. Diwali or Dipawali means a rows of lamps.
There is flurry of activity before Diwali as people clean up their
homes, plann ahead for the next year and pray that it will be a
prosperous one. The business houses bring their accounts up to date
and visit their clients with gifts and sweets. On the Diwali day
Goddess Lakhsmi, the hindu goddess of wealth is also prayed and
the doors are left open in a hope that she shall visit the household
and bless them with everlasting prosperity. People wear new clothes,
a lot of food is prepared, keeping with the Indian tradition of
feasting during a festival. Fireworks are an essential part of the
festival and crores of rupees worth of fireworks light up the moonless
sky.
